That sudden thunderstorm may be a welcome relief from summer’s heat and humidity, but for the unprepared home, heavy rains can spell disaster. Loose roof shingles are easy targets for strong wind, likewise, siding that has blown off due to wind or clogged gutters facilitates water infiltration into the home.

“Storms have increased over the last couple of years,” says Tom DiRocco, Storm Restoration Manager for G. Fedale’s Storm Division, located in Glen Mills, Pa. Tom points to the severity of the storm that touched down near Middletown, De. in July, as just one example.

The intensity of these storms and the immediacy of repairs have kept us so busy, that several years ago we established a Storm Damage Division. PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

Regular observation and maintenance go a long way when it comes to preventing the need for major repair or full replacement of structural components in the aftermath of a storm. Tree limbs that overhang the roof should be trimmed and gutters should be cleaned a couple of times a year, depending upon the extent of adjacent foliage. A gutter-guard system helps keep that task to a minimum. Loose roof shingles or unlocked aluminum-siding panels should be repaired. Check for rotting window frames – mold will flourish in areas previously affected by water damage. Be aware, however, that a homeowner’s policy typically won’t reimburse for exacerbated wood damage following a storm if it’s thought to be a pre-existing problem.

HOMEOWNER’S INSURANCE ASSISTANCE

Tom says most people don’t realize that their homeowner’s insurance can, however, cover many repairs following a storm. G. Fedale can serve as the go-between between the customer and his or her insurance company, and negotiate a more advantageous outcome for the homeowner. For instance, if storm damage is limited to a portion of the roof, but the pre-existing shingle has since been discontinued, we can negotiate an upgrade.
