When it comes to choosing a siding color, a number of considerations come into play. Everything from what meets the eye regarding matchups to exterior trim, gutters, and roof, to the visual aesthetic of the neighborhood should factor into the ultimate selection.
“We spend a lot of time with customers to decide on color,” says Jasen Maciey, a senior project consultant here at G. Fedale Roofing and Siding.
The marketplace has a plethora of color options whether one is choosing vinyl or fiber cement siding. The latter choice, now not so new, was introduced by industry leader James Hardie as a replacement to asbestos siding in the 1980s. The paintable composite alternative is made from Portland cement, sand, water, and cellulose fibers, with color options ranging in the hundreds.
While siding may be among the largest exterior features of one’s home, choose a color that contrasts nicely with coexisting structural components. In addition to the color of the roof shingles, consider the other accents like window trim, doors, shutters, garage, and gutters.
It’s been said that mimicry is the best form of flattery, but choosing the same color as that of the next-door neighbor may not go over well. “Typically, there are four-to-six color wheels if you will within a neighborhood,” Jasen says, adding that gray or blue are among the more popular choices in the G. Fedale service area. Likewise, vinyl siding remains a popular choice for our locale as it expands and contracts better than fiber cement.
Jasen also suggests that a check-in with the Homeowner’s Association (HOA) should there be one, may also be wise, to ensure color is within keeping of the development’s bylaws. Void of any restrictions, given the longevity of both vinyl and fiber cement, a more conservative choice is better over what’s currently hot. The latter may be a passing fad that fades in time.
Forward thinking is also advisable as storm or wind damage may require panel replacement during the life of the siding. An unusual shade may be harder to come by. Selecting a reputable company for the original install makes for a greater chance that the original color is still available.
